When I was still a kid I heard that some special occasions, which are being celebrated in America, such as Father’s Day, were invented by Hallmark Cards, Inc. in order to boost their sales. Whether or not it’s true that this special day dedicated to fathers is a result of consumerism, we cannot deny that Father’s Day is already a part of the Filipino tradition.
I found out, however, that unlike on birthdays, most Filipino fathers do not expect presents from anyone on Father’s Day. When asked what gift they would love to receive for that day, the usual answer is, “I can’t think of anything.” They really cannot imagine receiving gifts for that occasion. For them, a kiss, a hug, and a “thank you” are enough. But if ever you are thinking of giving your special dad something, here are the top 10 things that most dads would like to receive.
- Hearty greetings from wife and children
- Greeting cards
- Personalized items (e.g. a hanky with a name embroidered)
- “Blow out” – a dinner
- Perfume for daily use
- Rubber shoes
- Backpack / Sports bag
- Electronic gadgets
- Sports cap
At the end of the day, the gift that every father would really be happy receiving is the love of his children and of his wife. We may give all the 10 mentioned above but it will still be the love that goes with it they would cherish the most.
Happy Father’s Day!
