In the Philippines, a “yaya” or a nanny is a usual part of the family especially if the mom has to work to make ends meet. The children are left to the care of the yaya for most parts of the day. But how do you know that your kids are safe with their yaya? As parents, we need to be sure that our kids are well so here are some tell-tale signs of a bad nanny:
1. Doesn’t know proper hygiene
If the yaya doesn’t know how to care for herself, there is a big chance that she doesn’t know how to care for the kids especially when it comes to making sure the kids are clean or eating healthy food. Another concern is that she might not be cleaning the area or the things that the children are using. She might also be sharing utensils or food with the children and this can pass sickness from nanny to the kids.
2. Doesn’t focus on work
If the yaya always uses her cellphone while watching over the kids or talks to the neighbours while leaving the kids behind, your kids might not be safe with her. If the yaya is more concerned about the TV show she is watching, she can not properly monitor what is happening to the kid, especially if she is taking care of babies, toddlers and very active preschoolers.
3. Doesn’t tell the truth
If the yaya has been caught cheating or lying about something, it is best to confront her. If she can lie about something little, then it is most probable that she can lie about something important too.
Doesn’t follow the instructions properly
If the yaya can not follow your instructions properly, your kids would not be safe with her. Since she will be with your kids most of the day, it is important that she understands what is expected of her.
4. Child squirms when being left with the yaya
While separation anxiety might be normal with the child, you should watch out for some signs that there are more reasons why child doesn’t want to be left with the yaya. The yaya could be hitting the child or doing something inappropriate with the child. It is best to always talk with your child and be aware of what is going on inside the house while you are away.
